Community support

There needs to be someone who can help the students' interests in band. As a future band director, this will make it harder for me.

At Burton, at least from my experience there, and what I've seen since graduating, the band lets the cheerleaders hear their songs and the cheerleaders come up with dances for the songs, football players pick certain songs that they want the band to play to help "pump them up" and the band loves to play what football players like. Football players and cheerleaders in the band...I could go on and on. Football team, cheerleaders and band all work together to make sure it's a great time for everybody, fans get in the stands and dance with the cheerleaders, football players waving their hands up & down when they hear their favorite songs. That's the atmosphere at Burton games, that's why their fans are so into it.

I really liked your post! That is the way I think it should be and when I was in Highschool, many years ago, that is the way it was. I noticed this more so last year at Senior night. When they announced the senior football players, one at a time, my wife and I clapped for each kid but I immediately noticed that none of the band members clapped, or none that I could see. Now the band parents clapped. But it was the same for the band members. When the seniors were announced, none of the football players clapped and I just thought that was odd. Same when the cheerleaders were announced. I am not saying that 100% of each group never clapped but a great percentage did not clap. I know that when they have "pep rallys"(spelling may be wrong) that everyone is excited and everyone participates.
Again this is just an observation and if I am wrong then I apologize if I have offended anyone.

I think you're right and no one should be offended. I think a lot of it has to do with school size. In bigger schools there are more cliques. In smaller schools, like Burton, it's really hard to have cliques cause there would only be 5 or 6 kids in them. When you have 200 students in 5 grades they really have no choice but to be friends with everyone and work together at whatever they do. Plus parents are very active at Norton's schools. There are student mentor programs where seniors mentor 8th graders and juniors and seniors go to the elementary school and read to the kids, tutor them, etc. Parents take turns cooking for the football team every week so all the kids can get together before games. Norton really is like one big family, I couldn't imagine my kids going to school anywhere else. My son is in elem. school and there are on 15 kids in his class, he gets tons of help with work, teachers aren't over exerted trying to take care of too many kids in each room. It really is a great community.

Rickie Harris was in the band at Norton and marched with them at halftime of most games if not all!...

Indian Dad did indeed graduate. I taught him.
